What is Polkadot?
Watch this first
Shawn Tabrizi gives a talk on “The Resilience of Polkadot.”
A simple explanation
In short, Polkadot is three things today:
- Web3 Manifested - the foremost expression and implementation of Web3 values
- Resilient Infrastructure - can power multiple independent chains and applications
- A multi-chain ecosystem - the collection of products and services built on Polkadot and the people that make up the DAO
Mission
Polkadot’s mission is to create a secure, scalable, and resilient platform for Web3 applications and services.
Vision
A ubiquitous computer network that protects user interests by design, delivering freedom and self-sovereignty for individuals
Philosophies
- “less trust more truth”
- “against blockchain maximalism”
- “the best solution today will not necessarily be the best solution tomorrow”
For more on these philosophies, see Shawn’s great talk given at the Polkadot Blockchain Academy (PBA).
Maxims
These principles which underlie Polkadot and the forthcoming JAM are an expression of the properties that Web3 systems should be designed to uphold.
- resilience
- generality
- performance
- coherence
- accessibility
See Gav explain these maxims with his intro to JAM at EthPrague.
Enterprise Adopters
Given its resilient architecture, Polkadot is a great fit for enterprises that need to deploy blockchains, applications and services. Here are a selection of enterprise customers that are building on Polkadot.
-
Heathrow Airport (Aventus)
-
Volkswagon (Energy Web)
-
Swiss Railways (Origin Trail)
-
NFL Rivals (Mythical Games)
-
Bosch (Peaq)
Aventus, Energy Web, Origin Trail, Mythical and Peaq are some of the L1 blockchains running on Polkadot. They use Polkadot blockspace to provide products and services to enterprise customers.
Polkadot Tech & Playbook
Polkadot is:
50+ active rollups driving 13M transactions across 300K active accounts per month on average
